YOU MEDIA MOGUL, YOU
We complain about the media. But now we are the media. Scroll through your newsfeed and see what we are broadcasting with the power of these accounts. Are we contributing? Are we antagonizing? Are we informing? Are we entertaining? What are we doing with the attention of humanity? Helping to increase its value? Inspiring it? Healing it? Or, diminishing it? Distracting it? Or, dividing and pitting people against one another?
Are we any better than the media we complain about? Do we handle the power of influence and connectivity with any greater civic responsibility? Or, are we just whores for the bottom line profits like many of our corporate counterparts?
They program their channels with sex, conflict and sensationalism in order to mesmerize your attention, and earn advertiser money. That’s the profit in their game. In the realm of social media, do we do the same for clicks, comments and views?
Sex sells. Pretty faces and bodies sell. And isn’t that why girls/women all over IG are half naked thirsting for the emotional profit of attention––in clicks and views?
Cable news is just a bunch of people arguing with each other and pointing blame in hotly contested poorly informed debates––of ego vs. ego. Been on FB lately?
The rest of television, from the most ignorant un-real housewife, to some Xtreme sports spectacle, to the “look at how important I am” red-carpet celebrity vanity-fests, to keeping up with the latest KarFLASHian, or the FoodPorn network, or the “don’t you wish you had enough money to travel like us?” network––are we really any different?
What have we done with the “opportunity” and “power” of media? We haven’t done that much better than those we complain about, right?
Well, now that I’ve raised your awareness about the power you have in hand, what shall you choose to program on your network (your account) going forward? How would you like to consciously impact the world? You’re doing it anyway––for better or for worse. Look at everyone on your friends list, your society. Every time you post, you’re shaping minds and hearts––whether you like it or not. I hope you’re doing it well. You are the media now. Did you hear me? I said… YOU ARE THE MEDIA NOW.
So what shall “you” choose to do with this power?
